Exposing a new way Hackers tends to Steal money from MMM members...

Ever since MMM came into Nigeria earlier this year, the platform has managed to win the heart of many Nigerians who are devoted and committed to it for financial benefit. This enthusiasm is induced in part by the economic hardship in the country and many view MMM as a way to curtail or emancipate from the difficult economic realities in the country.

But as Nigerians are trying to make the best of the MMM platform despite serious warning from the government, internet fraudsters popularly called in Nigeria ‘Yahoo Yahoo boys’ have devised new means to steal money from people investing in MMM.

The fraudsters randomly send messages to random email addresses with a warning about the MMM account of the reader, and to resolve the issue, urge the user to click on a link they provide or visit www.mmm-0ffice.com. In the email they clearly wrote www.mmm-office.com when you click, it links to www.mmm-0ffice.com.

Notice that www.mmm-office.com is different from www.mmm-0ffice.com. The difference is ‘o’ and ‘0’ while the official website of the MMM office has the letter zero, the scammers website has the number 0.

The scammers website is a clone of the MMM office website and once users login, all their information is stolen and the fraudsters will have access to their account, to do as they please including diverting money.

It appears the criminals are so naive that they even send these emails to email addresses of people that have nothing to do with MMM. For example, such email was sent to the gmail address of Nigeria Today.

Here is the email:

“Hello!
Your account system in the system to detect the use of multiple accounts, please immediately log verification, in 3 working days without your record account will be limited to cash!
Please click this link to log in to your account: Sign in now
If you do not have the system account registered, please delete the message, do not reply
Remember our official website: http://mmm-office.com Please”

Notice that in the last paragraph of their email, they actually wrote the correct website of MMM office website but check by our IT department reveals that when you click on it, you are linked to the fake website with 0 instead of o.

This kind of internet hack is called phishing.
According to Wikipedia: “Phishing is the attempt to obtain sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money), often for malicious reasons, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication.”
